NEW CDC Data on Juvenile Arthritis (JA) Prevalence and Associated Disparities

"Arthritis Among Children and Adolescents <18 Years—United States 2017–2021"

The new Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report study from the CDC Arthritis Management and Wellbeing Program found nearly 220,000 children had arthritis during 2017 - 2021, raising awareness of the need for research and programming for children and adolescents with or at risk for arthritis. The study also found disparities by race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and parental education.

Social Media Messages for JA Awareness Month

Need social media messages? CDC has social media messages and graphics to help promote arthritis facts! Tweets are available highlighting JA Awareness.

Partner Activities and Success Stories

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded funding to the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) through DP18-1802 to convene state and national organizations to address arthritis public health priorities and develop the arthritis sharing platform.

NACDD is using CDC arthritis funding to develop and implement an evidence-informed health care provider approach to:

  • Conduct function, pain, and physical activity assessments.
  • Counsel patients on the benefits of physical activity.
  • Refer patients to arthritis-appropriate physical activity and self-management education programs.

Walk with Ease for Knee Osteoarthritis (OA): A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis

A NEW study on Walk with Ease found that the program offers a good value for people who are inactive or not active enough.

  • Conduct function, pain, and physical activity assessments.
  • Counsel patients on the benefits of physical activity.
  • Refer patients to arthritis-appropriate physical activity and self-management education programs.

WATCH OA Action Alliance’s Lunch & Learn on Using Virtual Reality for Pain Management

Nancy Baker, ScD, MPH, OT, FAOTA, is a recognized expert in musculoskeletal disorders related to work and arthritis. Her current work focuses on using virtual reality for pain management. A written transcript of the presentation is available on request (contact Katie Huffman).

New CID Supplement Highlights Evolving Global Challenges of AR

New CID Journal Supplement Highlights Critical Need for Global Efforts to Combat AR

With support from CDC and in partnership with Health Security Partners, the Clinical Infectious Diseases (CID) journal has published a new supplement, The Evolving Challenges of Antibiotic Resistance in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Priorities and Solutions. The supplement:

  • Reveals alarmingly high levels of antimicrobial resistance (AR) in hospitals and communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), even before the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Shows increased antibiotic use, rapid spread of AR genes in hospitals, and high numbers of antimicrobial-resistant infections in several countries during the pandemic
  • Explores interventions that can help regain the ground lost in combating AR globally during the COVID-19 pandemic

Data on AR from LMICs are sparse. This supplement helps fill the gap, providing data on AR and antibiotic use from communities and hospitals across several LMICs.

CDC and partners work to combat AR globally through the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory and Response Network, including the Antibiotic Resistance in Communities and Hospitals research consortium, and the Global Action in Healthcare Network. These collaborations aim to accelerate progress in preventing infections, detecting infections rapidly when they do occur, and responding effectively to outbreaks.

Access the CID supplement to learn more about the critical need for a global effort to improve antibiotic use through stewardship programs and to protect people from AR by implementing infection prevention and control strategies.
