CPSTF Recommends Community Interventions Involving Coalitions or Partnerships to Prevent Substance Use Among Youth

The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommends community interventions involving coalitions or partnerships to prevent substance use among youth. Most studies were conducted in rural or suburban communities. Evidence from the systematic review shows interventions reduce both initiation and use of the following:

  • Cannabis
  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol, including binge drinking
  • Illegal substances

Some studies also found reductions in self-reported antisocial behaviors among youth.

How can community interventions prevent substance use?

Community interventions involving coalitions or partnerships focus on preventing substance use among adolescents (ages 10-17 years) or young adults (ages 18-24 years). Interventions may focus on a specific substance of importance to the community or address risk and protective factors related to substance use in general.

Why is this important?

  • Youth substance use is associated with increased behavioral and academic problems; teen pregnancy; sexually transmitted infections; involvement in, or experience with, violence; injuries; and mental health symptoms, such as anxiety and depression.
  • Preventing or delaying youth initiation reduces later risk for substance use, substance use disorders, and overdose.
  • Changes in the legal and regulatory landscape for substances including cannabis and psychedelics as well as the increased availability of illegally-made fentanyl and other synthetic opioids can affect overdose morbidity and mortality.
  • Recent trends in substance use among youth indicate stabilization or decreases for all substance categories; however, some youth continue to experience high rates of substance use and associated harms (e.g., LGBTQ+ students).

Get ready for U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week!

November 18 Kicks Off
U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW) 2024

Every year, CDC recognizes U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW) from November 18-24 to raise awareness about the importance of improving antibiotic and antifungal use, preventing infections from happening in the first place, and combating antimicrobial resistance (AR). The USAAW observance aligns with World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW).  

This year the theme for USAAW is “Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance Takes All of Us.” Working together, through a One Health approach, we must improve the global prescribing and use of antibiotic and antifungal drugs and invest in global prevention actions across the health of humans, animals, plants, and the environment.

During USAAW, CDC will focus on a different topic and key message related to antimicrobial resistance each day. Daily themes include: 

  • November 18: Fighting antimicrobial resistance takes all of us
  • November 19: Global antimicrobial resistance
  • November 20: Human health & antimicrobial resistance
  • November 21: Animal health & antimicrobial resistance
  • November 22: Antimicrobial resistance in agriculture and the environment
  • November 23: One Health approach to antimicrobial resistance
  • November 24: Continuing the fight against antimicrobial resistance

  • Sign up to receive a toolkit to Go Purple for USAAW and help get members of your network involved.

  • Light up buildings and landmarks in purple for the week.
  • Bring purple to your online presence by sharing Go Purple and USAAW messages to your organization’s website, wearing purple when on camera during online meetings, and sharing why you are wearing purple.

Health Advisory: Disruptions in Availability of Products from Baxter International

CDC Health Advisory:
Disruptions in Availability of Peritoneal Dialysis and Intravenous Solutions from Baxter International Facility in North Carolina

CDC is issuing this Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory to inform healthcare providers, pharmacists, healthcare facility administrators, and state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments of a supply disruption of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and intravenous (IV) solutions from the Baxter International’s plant in North Carolina, due to Hurricane Helene.

The supply disruption could impact patient care and require adjustments to the clinical management of patients. Healthcare providers, pharmacists, healthcare facility administrators—regardless of supply chain disruptions—should immediately assess their supply and develop plans and mitigation strategies to reduce the potential impact on patient care.


A disruption in the availability of these products can affect optimal patient care. Facilities can implement strategies to conserve their fluid supplies and avoid waste early to reduce the impact on services.
