New CID Journal Supplement Highlights Critical Need for Global Efforts to Combat AR

With support from CDC and in partnership with Health Security Partners, the Clinical Infectious Diseases (CID) journal has published a new supplement, The Evolving Challenges of Antibiotic Resistance in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Priorities and Solutions. The supplement: Reveals alarmingly high levels of antimicrobial resistance (AR) in hospitals and communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), even before the COVID-19 pandemic Shows increased antibiotic use, rapid spread of AR genes in hospitals, and high numbers of antimicrobial-resistant infections in several countries during the pandemic Explores interventions that can help regain the ground lost in combating AR globally during the COVID-19 pandemic Data on AR from LMICs are sparse. This supplement helps fill the gap, providing data on AR and antibiotic use from communities and hospitals across several LMICs. CDC and partners work to combat AR globally through the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory and Response Network, including the Antibiotic Resistance in Communities and Hospitals research consortium, and the Global Action in Healthcare Network. These collaborations aim to accelerate progress in preventing infections, detecting infections rapidly when they do occur, and responding effectively to outbreaks.
