CDC update on highly antibiotic-resistant infections in U.S. patients

Antibiotic-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections in Patients Who Had Recent Invasive Medical Procedures in Mexico

CDC continues to monitor reports of highly antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa identified in individuals who have recently had invasive medical procedures in Mexico. Since July 2020, CDC received reports of eight patients who presented to U.S. healthcare facilities with these infections following surgeries in Mexico. At this time, there is no evidence of an ongoing outbreak linked to a particular facility or surgeon.

  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic CDC recommends delaying all travel at this time, but if you must travel for a medical procedure outside of the US, CDC’s Travelers’ Health website has information on risks of infection associated with medical tourism and getting health care during travel.
  • Patients who underwent medical procedures in Mexico should seek medical care at the first sign of infection (e.g., redness, pus or swelling at the surgical incision site) and tell their healthcare providers of their exposure to health care outside the United States.
  • Healthcare providers caring for patients who underwent invasive procedures in Mexico should be alert for highly resistant infections and take precautions to prevent the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria to other patients.
  • Healthcare providers should continue to ask patients about international travel history given this increased number of antibiotic-resistant infections, the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, and reports of Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Guinea.
