A decade of AR Solutions Initiative

Latest from CDC on Antibiotic Resistance (AR)

CDC is Celebrating 10 Years of the Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions Initiative

We are excited to share that 2026 marks the 10-year anniversary of CDC’s Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions Initiative (ARSI)!

ARSI has made investments in health departments and external partners, resulting in:

  • Enhanced healthcare quality and safety by preventing healthcare-associated infections.

  • Built a national infrastructure for antimicrobial resistance (AR) detection and rapid response in health care and in communities.

  • Improved the appropriate use of antibiotics and antifungals across healthcare settings.

  • Developed innovative solutions to solve our most pressing AR-related challenges.
To help celebrate a decade of work combating AR, learn more about some of the activities funded through ARSI:

10 Years Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions Initiative

Check out the updated Antimicrobial Resistance Investment Map

  • CDC recently released an update to the Antimicrobial Resistance (AR) Investment Map, highlighting CDC’s extramural funding to combat the threat of AR in fiscal year 2025.

  • This funding includes more than $118 million to strengthen U.S. capacity to slow the spread of AR and improve infection prevention and control.

Celebrate CDC’s Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory Network 10th Anniversary

  • CDC’s Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory Network (AR Lab Network), established in 2016 through ARSI, supports U.S. public health labs to rapidly detect AR and inform local responses in all 50 states, several cities and U.S. territories.

  • Through the end of 2025, the AR Lab Network has conducted more than 1.5 million tests, including 424,000+ isolate characterizations; 464,000+ colonization screenings; and 611,000+ whole genome sequences to rapidly identify AR and control outbreaks.

Check out the CDC & FDA Antimicrobial Resistance Isolate Bank, which recently reached two major milestones—10 years of service and 500,000 isolates shipped:

  • Founded in 2015, the Antimicrobial Resistance Isolate Bank (AR Isolate Bank) is one of the largest collections of isolates of drug-resistant bacterial and fungal isolates gathered from specimens in healthcare, food, and community settings.

  • Over the past 10 years, the AR Isolate Bank has offered the scientific community free access to high-quality and well-characterized isolates and their associated testing data. Given its unique positioning of offerings and access, the AR Isolate Bank helps increase the body of scientific knowledge, improve patient care, and support solutions to drug-resistant threats.

  • Check out these new fact sheets: 10 Years of Impact and 10 Facts for 10 Years to learn more!

DYK that for 10 years, CDC’s AR Solutions Initiative has strengthened the nation’s ability to find drug-resistant infections faster, guide treatment, and respond effectively to outbreaks.
