The Commons Salon: 25 Years of Creative Commons, Held Together
With both Wikipedia and Creative Commons turning 25 this year, we are thrilled to jointly celebrate this milestone with a pre-conference session at Wikimania 2026. The Commons Salon is an intimate, participatory gathering marking 25 years of Creative Commons as a lived, human practice.
In small, facilitated circles, CC community members, Wikimedians, creators, educators, and stewards of shared knowledge will share stories of joy, tension, care, and contradiction, celebrating what openness has made possible. We will explore different dimensions of the commons as a lived experience while producing shared artifacts that represent and reinforce the resilience of the Wikimedia and Creative Commons ecosystems. This half-day session will be a collective moment to reconnect participants to our relationships, responsibilities, and hopes for the next generation.
This pre-conference session will take place on July 21 in the morning. Pre-register for the event below to save your spot! We are actively looking for panelists/facilitators for this session. Let us know by email if you'd like to contribute. We hope to see you there!
