Map Shows Investments to Fight Antibiotic Resistance

Latest from CDC on Antibiotic Resistance (AR)

Updated Map Shows CDC’s Investments
to Fight Antibiotic Resistance

Today CDC released new information in its Antibiotic Resistance (AR) Investment Map showing the agency’s fiscal year 2020 funding to all U.S. state health departments and 50 partners to combat antibiotic resistance domestically and around the world.

New this year, the tool includes a fact sheet highlighting CDC's investments in innovation efforts [PDF] related to combating AR. The AR Investment Map also features printable global-, state- and city-specific fact sheets that describe how CDC invested more than $118 million in 2020 AR activities.

Through CDC’s AR Solutions Initiative, CDC is making measurable progress on the national public health goals for AR, outlined in the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, 2020-2025. Although dedicated prevention and infection control efforts in the United States have effectively reduced the number of infections and deaths caused by antibiotic-resistant germs, more action is needed to fully protect people. Each year in the United States, more than 3 million people are infected by an antibiotic-resistant germ or C. difficile (a bacterium associated with antibiotic use), and nearly 50,000 people die.

This is the fifth iteration of the AR Investment Map following Congress’ unprecedented investment in CDC’s AR Solutions Initiative in 2016. Use the AR Investment Map to find CDC activities in your area and other CDC work to combat AR.
