How culture lives on

Hi concerns2me,

It’s our 25th Anniversary!

As you know, it’s our 25th anniversary! Support our Keep the Internet Human campaign and help us meet our ambitious goal to raise $5 million.

Ever wondered about the impact of the CC licenses? Read on.

CC licenses make sharing possible without erasing origins.

Consider what the Open Culture Nigeria project accomplished in 2023. A team of librarians and Wikimedians traveled to galleries, law libraries, and museums across the country, photographing collections, applying CC licenses, and uploading everything to Wikimedia Commons.  They visited an art gallery in Ibadan housing Batik tapestries and beadwork, the Arewa House in Kaduna, and a museum preserving the history and traditions of Northern Nigeria's many peoples. Their goal was simple and profound: build an open digital repository to share these works with the world. Attribution made it possible, anchoring each image to its institution, its community, its story.

Nigeria's cultural heritage didn't disappear into a generic digital archive. It arrived on the global internet with a name, a place, and a people attached.

CC is more than just a toolset. It’s a social fabric made up of millions of people choosing to share.

Want to flex your creative muscle and contribute to the commons? We’re currently accepting submissions of visual art, short writing, comics, and more for our 25th Anniversary Zine. Submissions should explore the theme “Remix is Resistance.” Click here to learn more and submit your work.
