Hi concerns2me,
It’s our 25th Anniversary!
Last week, we officially launched our Keep the Internet Human campaign, inviting you to help us reach our ambitious goal of raising $5 million in honor of this milestone.
We’re sharing stories showcasing how we’re working to Keep the Internet Human. Today, we want to go back to the start…
As Cory Doctorow shared in his recent blog post, “Creative Commons arose out of the copyright wars of the early 2000s, in which the severe deficiencies of using copyright as the primary form of internet regulation were becoming ever clearer.”
To respond to the threats posed by restrictive copyright laws and enable open sharing online, Creative Commons was founded in 2001. In 2002, we introduced the first set of CC licenses.
Since then, CC licenses have grown in popularity, popping up in every corner of the internet. Today, there are tens of billions of works licensed under one of the Creative Commons Licenses. This includes all Wikipedia content, in every language, created since 2009 when Wikipedia transitioned exclusively to CC licenses!
Want to learn more about the history of CC? Last week, we hosted Creative Commons 101: A Brief History. In case you missed it, you can watch a recording here.
