Sepsis: Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic

World Sepsis Day: COVID-19 Has Uncovered Unique Opportunities for Sepsis


Today is World Sepsis Day--a day where people come together to raise awareness of the fight against sepsis--a life-threatening medical emergency that affects millions of people each year.

This year, we reflect on the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has created in preventing, diagnosing, and treating infections and sepsis. The COVID-19 pandemic has also uncovered unique opportunities to better understand how infections develop and how to care for patients. It has taught us how to structure healthcare systems to provide improved infection prevention, better understanding of sepsis, and better care for patients and survivors in both the short- and long-term.

CDC remains committed to the goal of protecting patients, of all ages and in all settings, and to our responsibility to reduce the impact of sepsis. Anyone can get an infection, and almost any infection, including COVID-19, can lead to sepsis. Sepsis is the body's extreme response to an infection. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have triggers a chain reaction throughout your body. Without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.
