Updated Map Highlights CDC’s Investments to Fight Antibiotic Resistance

Today, CDC released the newest iteration of its Antibiotic Resistance (AR) Investment Map, highlighting CDC’s AR funding to global and domestic partners—from academic centers to global implementation partners to local public health departments. These partners work alongside CDC to slow the spread of antibiotic resistance and implement innovative solutions to protect people from antibiotic resistance.

Highlights of this year’s AR Investment Map release include: An interactive map showcasing CDC’s antibiotic resistance funding to support activities in every U.S. health department and across hundreds of public health partners An updated fact sheet featuring CDC’s global investments with partners in more than 50 countries to improve detection, prevention, and response to AR threats internationally An updated fact sheet showing how CDC’s COVID-19 efforts have also worked to address antibiotic resistance, including investments in infection prevention and control, training, surveillance, and public health personnel CDC is also announcing details on new innovation funding to partners across three CDC programs working in health care, where antibiotic-resistant pathogens can spread rapidly without proper prevention measures. In Fiscal Year 2021, CDC awarded more than $36 million for innovative AR research to diverse partners, including healthcare partners in the following networks and programs: CDC’s Modeling Infectious Diseases in Healthcare Network (MInD), which supports innovative transmission modeling research to expand knowledge of what causes the spread of healthcare-associated infections and AR infections in the U.S.; CDC’s Prevention Epicenters Program, which works with academic medical centers to implement innovative strategies to improve healthcare quality and patient safety; and CDC’s Safety and Healthcare Epidemiology Prevention Research Development (SHEPheRD) program, which provides collaborative opportunities for partners to research and develop new approaches to prevent healthcare-associated infections and the spread of antibiotic resistance across hospitals and long-term care facilities. CDC leads the U.S. public health response to combat antibiotic resistance, a threat that continues to emerge and spread across the world. CDC’s Antibiotic Resistance (AR) Solutions Initiative invests in national infrastructure to detect, respond, contain, and prevent resistant infections across healthcare settings, communities, the food supply, and the environment.
