A new study in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) reports that in 2018, one in six US adults binge drank, increasing their risk for preventable diseases and injuries. Binge drinking was most common among men, and adults who had higher family incomes ($75,000 or more), were non-Hispanic White, or were living in the Midwest. Among adults who binge drank, 25% did so at least weekly and 25% consumed at least eight drinks during a binge occasion. Strategies recommended by the Community Preventive Services Task Force (e.g., regulating alcohol sales, increasing alcohol taxes) can reduce binge drinking.

CDC recently awarded a new cooperative agreement, Promoting Population Health Through Increased Capacity in Alcohol Epidemiology and the Prevention of Excessive Alcohol Use. The purpose of this 5-year cooperative agreement is to build state capacity in alcohol epidemiology and provide the tools and information needed to perform core public health functions related to excessive alcohol use prevention in states. It includes an additional component to provide expert technical assistance and training on population-level evidence-based strategies for preventing excessive alcohol use and related harms in states and communities, such as those recommended by the Community Preventive Services Task Force.
