Turtles and Terrapins and Tortoises, Oh My!

Before traveling with freshwater and land turtles, pay attention to CDC guidelines. CDC restricts importing small turtles, terrapins, and tortoises by size and number, because they have been linked to Salmonella infections in children.

Turtles, terrapins, and tortoises with shells less than 4 inches long can only be imported for noncommercial purposes (such as personal pets).

One person may import up to any combination of 6 total small turtles or eggs that could hatch.

More than 6 small turtles can only be imported with CDC permission for science, education, or exhibition purposes. Please contact CDCanimalimports@cdc.gov for more information.

Small turtles and turtle eggs cannot be imported for commercial purposes, including resale.
