Join CDC for Fungal Disease Awareness Week, September 19-23, to learn more about fungal diseases and antimicrobial-resistant fungi.

Why should we #ThinkFungus?

Anyone can get a fungal infection, even people who are otherwise healthy. People breathe in or come into contact with fungal spores every day without getting sick. However, in people with weakened immune systems, these fungi are more likely to cause an infection. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic increased the burden of resistant fungal infections in the United States, threatening patient safety.

Antifungal drugs treat fungal infections by killing or stopping the growth of dangerous fungi in the body. Sometimes fungi can develop antimicrobial resistance, which is the ability to defeat the antifungal drugs designed to kill them.

What can be done?

CDC is increasing surveillance of fungal diseases, so scientists can learn more about the impact of fungal diseases and how many people in the United States are affected by them. For example, the Antimicrobial Resistance Lab Network is expanding Candida auris colonization screenings.

Healthcare providers and patients should #ThinkFungus if antibiotics aren’t working so healthcare providers can diagnose the right illness and the patient can receive the right treatment faster. This also helps slow the development of antimicrobial resistance.
