Prevention Reduces Your Risk for Infection

Play Your Part to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance

Using Infection Prevention Best Practices Makes A Difference

Although U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week has come to an end, we can continue to combat antimicrobial resistance (AR) by improving how we use antibiotics and antifungal drugs all year long. Antibiotics and antifungals are some of our most powerful tools for fighting life-threatening infections – but AR will continue to develop, even against new drugs.

You can take simple steps to protect yourself and your family by reducing your risk of infection, including antimicrobial-resistant infections. In healthcare facilities, frontline healthcare workers also play an important role in fighting AR with infection control [PDF - 1 Page]. These actions help slow the development and spread of AR and preserve the power of antibiotics and antifungals:

  • Keep your hands clean and practice good hygiene
  • Stay up to date on recommended vaccines
  • Improve how you use antibiotics and antifungals for people, animals, and plants
  • Practice safer sex
  • Prepare food safely

Prevention puts a 'pause' on antimicrobial resistance. Play your part. Stay up to date on recommended vaccines. Prepare food safely. Keep hands clean. Improve antibiotic use.

Through its AR Solutions Initiative, CDC invests in prevention-focused public health actions, works with partners to drive aggressive action, and empowers the nation to respond comprehensively to the threat of AR. We look forward to continuing this work with you to help combat AR all year long!
